Accept Alipay and Wechat pay

How can we get paid from China? The parents want to pay by Alipay or Wechat pay, and all you have is Transferwise and Paypal.

The payment hurdle

In 2019 I was taking my first steps toward independent teaching, and I ran straight into the payment hurdle.

Alipay or Wechat pay is almost necessary to do business with parents in China, but these platforms require you to verify your account with a Chinese bank card. For this you need a Chinese bank account.

I couldn’t verify my Alipay account without a Chinese bank card.

I was a little bit frustrated.

But after searching some more, I learned that one way to accept Alipay and Wechat pay is through integration with Stripe, which is a global payment processor based in San Francisco. So using this, I built a China-facing website which can accept Alipay and Wechat pay.

Fast forward to today, a lot of teachers are thinking about teaching privately, owning a teaching business. Many teachers are asking questions about how to do payment, curriculum, marketing and other questions about private teaching. One of the big life-line questions is about getting paid. It wouldn’t be easy or cheap for every teacher to build this kind of website for themselves. There needed to be built a solution to the payment hurdle which every teacher can use.

I sprang into action

I consulted a developer and drew up plans. I dished out for professional Hong Kong hosting, and some custom plugins.

I tested it gradually…with 10 teachers, then 20, making changes.

So now, I can offer to you “My Teacher Shop”. It’s a website-as-a-service, that allows every teacher to accept Alipay and Wechat pay from their private students. Here’s how:

  • create an account
  • set up your private payment page and share the link via wechat or email
  • payment is forwarded to you

Fee: 6%

6% , all fees included. For example, If a customer pays 100 dollars, you receive 94 USD.

If payout is needed in currencies other than USD, then a $2 surcharge per payout.

There are no set-up fees, registration fees, hosting fees, or any recurring monthly fees. It’s free to create an account and set up a payment page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fee for?

Why do we need fees at all? The fees are what make the website possible. They help pay the expenses of running the site, and also mean I get paid for the work I do. The 6% covers all transfer fees and overhead expenses:

Transfer fees included: Stripe fee (2.9%+.30) and Transferwise fee (<1%).

Overhead expenses included: hosting, plugins and professional services.

What if I don’t have Transferwise

I would prefer you open a transferwise account, but you could give me bank details instead. Paypal is ok too.

Can I receive British Pounds or other currency?

Yes, but a $2/transaction surcharge applies to non-USD payouts.

Can my student see other teachers?

No, each payment page is private and separate from other pages. You won’t lost your student to a handsomer teacher.

Where is the website hosted?

In Hong Kong, using this hosting provider. Hosting in Hong Kong helps the website be fast and visible inside mainland China. Not cheap, but the 6% fee means the cost is shared by many teachers.

Does the payment go directly or through another account?

The payment goes first into a Stripe account, and is forwarded to your Transferwise manually, minus the fee. In the future, I will be able to allow teachers to connect their own Stripe accounts to accept payments directly.

Are there other fees?

6% , all fees included. For example, If a customer pays 100 dollars, you receive 94 USD.

If payout is needed in currencies other than USD, then a $2 surcharge per payout.

There are no set-up fees, registration fees, hosting fees, or any recurring monthly fees.

Can I connect my own Stripe account?

Soon you will, but not yet. Stripe Connect integration is coming soon. Once this is done, I will be able to allow teachers to connect their own Stripe accounts to accept payments directly.
